Anjou - clear rivers and fine food
and drink
Between Brittany and the Loire valley, Anjou is enclosed by the Rivers Mayenne and Sarthe. On a boating holiday cruise along gently flowing rivers through a rich countryside of chateaux, great estates, and picturesque villages.
Our main Anjou barge base is at Chenillé-Changé on the River Mayenne. It offers out and back cruises and one-way trips to La Suze on the River Sarthe 19km south of Le Mans. Chateauneuf barge base is open in July and August.
The village of Chenillé-Changé is noted for its flower displays, ancient houses with great slate roofs, a 12th century church and a water mill.
From here cruise north through unspoiled countryside to Chateau-Gontier with its chateau and old half-timbered mansions, past the ancient chateau at Laval to the head of the river at Mayenne.
South of Chenillé-Changé divert to Segré on the short River Oudon before continuing to Angers, a bustling old town with its cathedral and mighty fortress of 17 towers. At Angers the Mayenne meets the River Sarthe.
The River Sarthe meanders past lovely small towns such as Solesmes with its famous Gregorian Abbey, through Chateauneuf to our one-way base at La Suze and on to Malicorne, noted for its pottery and ancient chateau.
In Anjou you will find many places to moor, perhaps near restaurants renowned for the region’s cuisine such as perch in a light butter sauce, Port Salut cheese, cider and pear wine, and Anjou's own famous wines - no less than 28 appelations controlees.
A cruise in Anjou is a relaxing and enjoyable experience
